You’ve undoubtedly heard the saying that it takes village to raise a child.

It’s true of laughter clubs too.

Last year, I met Maria, a Cairns resident who works in Special Ed, who loves singing, loves art, loves her family and friends; a woman who is passionate about her community. (Were separated at birth perhaps?!)

Maria was visiting her son in Brisbane and came along to a park-based laughter yoga session. Within 45 minutes, she was hooked.

Why don’t we have this in Cairns, Maria wanted to know.

And I wanted it for her because, heck, why should Brisbane be the only place with Dr Madan Kataria inspired laughter clubs in Queensland. The state of Victoria—about 1/7th the size of Queensland – has more than 40 community based clubs. Admittedly it has a denser population but why are there only 3 active laughter clubs in Queensland, all in Brisbane?

It wasn’t, we both soon discovered, for an absence of people trained in the laughter yoga discipline. There are a few trained laughter leaders in Cairns but they live busy lives and on their own, a laughter club could not be realised.

So here’s what’s happening. Maria has knocked on doors, talked to people, explained, laughed and lobbied.

The Happydemic will be in Cairns to run Dr Kataria’s 2-day certified laughter yoga leader training program on the weekend on 10 and 11 June.

Yes,  there is a fee—you’ll find details on my training page—but for everyone who genuinely wants to be a part of the Laughter Club Cairns volunteer group, I will make a contribution to the club’s set-up (there’s public liability insurance to pay, for starters).

There’ll be a pop-up laugh-out in Cairns a few days before the training  (for details follow Laughter Club Cairns Facebook page) and a 30-minute community laughter session as part of the ‘graduation’ on the Sunday afternoon in the gorgeous Cairns Botanical Gardens.

Why would you want to train as a laughter yoga leader?

You learn to laugh more and stress less without comedy, humour or jokes, which is great for your own every day wellbeing.

You can apply elements of laughter yoga to your work  place.

In being part of a community laughter club, you become part of a welcoming, peaceful, happy and healthful group of people connected through the universal language of laughter: people who love the place they live.

I’m so excited for Cairns.  And Maria, you are amazing!
