Get Queensland seniors laughing

Laughter yoga is a wonderfully uplifting exercise accessible to all.

Laughter yoga involves simulated laughter exercises, deep yogic breathing and gentle stretches. Sessions can be run in a seated circle with exercises adapted to the abilities of participants.

Australian research recently published in The Australasian Journal on Ageing recommends laughter yoga’s inclusion in regular activity programs in residential aged care centres because it creates an environment that is fun and brighter for both residents and staff.

What Australian aged care laughter yoga research confirms

The work of laughter leader Ros Ben-Moshe and her La Trobe University colleagues confirmed that participants in the laughter yoga sessions benefited from improvements:

  • blood pressure
  • pulse
  • mood — positive and negative.

5 reasons seniors love laughter yoga

  1. Laughter yoga has proven physical benefits, strengthening the immune system, among them.
  2. Laughter yoga supports good mental health, working instantly like a tonic to help beat feelings of depression, frustration, anxiety; even grief.
  3. Laughter yoga connects people. Loneliness dissolves.
  4. Laughter yoga doesn’t require participants to remember or understand jokes. They laugh for laughter’s sake, as an exercise.
  5. A more positive attitude to life brings with it a willingness to live life more fully.

It has been scientifically proven that 20 minutes of laughter reaps real physiological benefits.

"Heather Joy’s laughter yoga session was the most fun I’ve had at work in a long time! It was great to do it as a group – a team building exercise in itself. I definitely got a dose of therapy and endorphins, a workout for my lungs, and came away with a new tool to de-stress at the end of a day."
